Who is the
Wedding Planning Institute?
The Wedding Planning Institute, a division of Lovegevity.com, Inc., is the industry leader in certification and training for wedding and event professionals. LWPI has established an academic network of nearly 2,000 colleges and universities in the United States, as well as a network of international colleges offering LWPI’s Wedding and Event Planning Certification. Established in 1997 by Cho Phillips, LWPI was founded with the sole purpose of providing an academic career path for aspiring wedding and social event planners.
In addition to the online curriculum, students can attend classes at a local college or university and learn from an established Wedding/Event Planner who has been in business in the local market for a minimum of five years. Students receive hands-on training, assist at real weddings/events, meet with guest speakers such as local vendors, and attend site/venue tours. Upon graduation, LWPI students are positioned to join an existing business, participate in non-paid internships, receive job placement assistance, or start their own business.

How does a student get started?
Call 252-222-6200 for local information & to register.
Call 1 888-221-9988 x.9000 and speak to a career counselor or visit www.weddingplanninginstitute.com/prestonbailey.
Once a student enrolls what happens next?
Student’s will receive an online password and login information to their student center and receive four (4) textbooks in the mail once the course launches on August 15th, 2010.
When a student finishes the course is there an internship, externship or job placement assistance?
Externship
Externships are experiential learning opportunities, similar to internships, offered by educational institutions to give students short practical experiences in their field of study. Externships are generally shorter than internships and last for approximately two days to a few weeks. Since they are less extensive, they are not usually given any academic credit. Due to the short duration, externships can be easily completed during a student’s spring and summer breaks or even during a January interim.
Externships can be viewed in terms of job shadowing. Externs are closely supervised and are walked through the day-to-day routines at the company or organization. The experience allows students to apply their coursework learning to a real life setting. They can be viewed as external studies, which combine classroom knowledge with real-world experience. This knowledge prepares students for the transition from school to career.
Externships can lead to opportunities after students complete their studies. They can help pre-graduates get their foot in the door for possible job opening or even make them better candidates for aggressive internship opportunities. The goal of an extern is to become familiar with new professions and job fields. Externships are also a source of networking contacts once a profession is chosen.
Internship
An intern is someone who works in a temporary position with an emphasis on on-the-job training rather than merely employment (SIH-199), making it similar to an apprenticeship. Interns are usually college or university students, but they can also be high school students or post graduate adults seeking skills for a new career. Student internships provide opportunities for students to gain experience in their field, determine if they have an interest in a particular career, create a network of contacts, or gain school credit.
An internship may be paid, unpaid or partially paid (in the form of a stipend). Internships may be part-time or full-time; typically they are part-time during the university year and full-time in the summer, and they typically last 6–12 weeks, but can be shorter or longer. The act of job shadowing may also constitute an internship.
How do LWPI’s internship and externship programs work?
An internship or externship is an opportunity for you to get hands-on experience in wedding and event planning and to further develop your skills. Doing an intern or externship enables you to connect the knowledge and skills you have gained from your academics and apply them in a work setting. Doing an intern or externship enables you to draw from your work experiences to inform what you have learned in the classroom.
In addition, an intern or externship lets you:
•determine if you enjoy working in a specific area of interest within the wedding & event planning industry
•get an insider's look at different employers
•make those important professional networking connections with people who may hire you in the future or be able to refer you to people who are able to hire you
•begin to develop the skills you'll need for a successful transition from certified graduate to professional
What should I consider before doing an internship or externship?
•what you hope to get out of the experience
•what skills and knowledge you bring to the intern or externship
•expectations your faculty advisor will have if you are doing the intern or externship for job placement
•expectations of your intern or externship site supervisor
•the type of organization where you're doing your intern or externship
•the number of hours a week you spend at your intern or externship
What you will get out of your intern or externship is a learning experience - one where you will polish your existing skills and develop new skills. You'll also get an edge on the competition when it comes to securing employment.
Call 1 888-221-9988 x.9000 and speak to a career counselor or visit www.weddingplanninginstitute.com/prestonbailey.

For someone who is already a wedding planner, how will this course help their career?
There is a distinctive difference between an event planner and an event designer. The event planner is involved in every aspect of the logistical project management of the planning process and the event itself; however, it is the event designer that designs the event details from top to bottom including the design surrounding the activities that make an event come to life. In many cases it is the designer that extracts the emotional and personal elements of a client and weaves it into the event design as an expression of who they are. A wedding planner taking this course will learn the art of design and how to apply design techniques to their existing fund of knowledge and services to their clients.

At Las the Market, we are thrilled to be back at the
Rio All Suites Resorts for September 2010!
Las Vegas the Market and the International Formalwear Association have agreed to coordinate their shows at the same time and at the same location for September 2010.
Las Vegas the Market’s Spring Bridal and Formal Wear Market is scheduled for September 11-13, at the Rio Suites and Hotel, Las Vegas, NV., and the IFA’s Expo 29 will also be held September 11-13, virtually across the hall at the Rio. Both shows will maintain their own identity, with separate show entrances and individual programs, but will be presented in close proximity at the Rio for the convenience of bridal and formalwear buyers.
“We are very enthusiastic about what this can mean to bridal buyers, who can now address their men’s formal wear needs while finalizing their bridal buy,” explained Randy Freidman, partner of North American Bridal Association, the promoter of Las Vegas the Market. “It’s another example of how we continue to evolve Las Vegas the Market based on the needs and desires of bridal buyers across North America.”
Ken Pendley, president of the IFA, agreed that holding both shows together would create synergies that benefit both IFA members and attendees of Las Vegas the Market. “The IFA board was unanimous in its decision to affiliate the IFA Expo with Las Vegas Market,” said Pendley, “and anticipate that doing so will help invigorate both shows.”
“This is a no brainer!! Finally bridal retailers can knock off two birds with one stone, I wouldn’t miss it……!!”

Dream Team Weddings
-
1 Aug 2010, 2:30 pm
It all started in 2005....
In 2005, Samantha Goldberg recognized that increasingly, there were some brides and grooms committed to planning their weddings, but who faced unforeseen or debilitating hardships along the way. Samantha wanted to find a way to help these couples, and appointed a “Dream Team” to review their individual situations and grant no-cost wedding services to a 5-7 couples per year. Since that heartfelt beginning, Samantha’s Dream Team and several New York/New Jersey area wedding service providers have volunteered to grant many couples wedding celebrations of their dreams.
In February of 2010, Samantha founded a Chicago, Illinois-based non-profit organization, the Dream Team, taking wing from her former charitable work and taking dream-granting to a national level, while also broadening the scope of what situations qualified couples for a no-cost dream wedding. The founding Dream Team chapter in Chicago began filling its Board of Directors and accepting dream wedding applications in late February. A second chapter in the New York/New Jersey area also became active. Ten more state and regional chapter rollouts are planned throughout 2010, with more to follow.
NC Chapter is being formed now. If you would like to help, contact Barbara Clark at info@an-elegant-affair.com or info@dreamteamwishes.org.
Couples the Dream Team assists may have experienced job losses, life threatening illnesses, military deployment, sudden death of a family member or other family emergencies. Brides and grooms submit their personal stories to www.dreamteamwishes.org. Every wish for a dream wedding undergoes careful consideration, though, understandably, not all wishes can be fulfilled. A Dream Team in the couple’s state or geographical region reviews and selects dream wedding recipients. To qualify for a dream wedding, an applicant must be a minimum of 18 years old, a legal citizen of the United States, and must be able to provide proof of a severe hardship or extenuating circumstance. The Dream Team does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, religion, creed, national origin, ancestry, sexual orientation or physical, mental, emotional or learning disability.
Mission:
The Dream Team is a non-profit organization committed to helping couples who have experienced severe or heartbreaking personal challenges plan a wedding to remember.
Vision:
Our Dream Team’s call to heart is connecting with couples under pressure and granting them dream weddings despite all obstacles.
Purpose:
We embrace the philosophy that love transcends all things, and we celebrate the union of marriage and the strength to persevere. When a couple’s dream is to be together forever, we work with wish granters across the nation to ensure their wedding dreams come true.
